DAYLIGHT hOMELESS CENTER

In response to Austin’s growing humanitarian crisis, our proposal envisions an adaptive reuse of a vacant, big box store at E. St John and I-35 outfitted with cargo containers to create micro living units inside. A 400 unit occupancy would allow verdant, communal spaces with ample natural light within a safe, secure, and durable environment. An anticipated unit cost of $12,000 would provide significantly better return on investment than current strategies.

The nearly 20 acre site would accommodate support services: medical clinic, skill training, and counseling services, in proximity to the living units. Investments would be made in long neglected Saint Johns Park, adjacent to the site, to include community amenities such as dog parks, walking trails, and natural areas.

Over the years, the resources needed for care and homeless prevention haven't kept pace with the growing population of the city, even though there's little debate that ending this crisis would be greatly beneficial for all citizens. This is an opportunity for the City of Austin to expediently and economically house scores of individuals currently on the street, in a facility that fosters their long term stability.
