CASE STUDY HOUSE

A rare new build in a historic, Central Austin neighborhood, this house seeks to contribute to its mid-century context with a modest scale and integration with the site. Set on a shallow, wide lot, the house negotiates numerous protected trees on a single story. A low pitched roof with expansive glazing connects the front yard to the back and, conversely, the interior to an idyllic neighborhood park directly across the street. Entry is choreographed between two massive limestone walls bookending a plane of glass. The light colored, honed texture of the stone provides a counterpoint to the course, dark brick facade.

The interior is organized with communal areas central and bedrooms on each wing. Designed for a  family of five, a library-office provides a refuge for the literary couple to work while the flexible floor plan accommodates play-time for their children. Though modest in area, the voluminous living room is visually warmed with a wood ceiling.

With its flexible, compact plan, use of simple materials, and integration with the site, the design endeavors to channel the spirit of the Mid-Century Modern movement.
